A Quote for life!

“A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly.

All professional people are in a profession but all people who are in a profession are not necessarily professional. While all professionals have a job, all job holders can not be termed as true professionals. Being professional is about:

· Attitude you show towards your profession
· Your behavior in your office
· Your stance towards your short term and long term goals (often guided by the company you work in)
· Self esteem and dignity you carry
· How you present yourself before your colleagues, bosses and supervisors
· How you react to happenings and changes around you and your workplace

A company is known by its employees and by the professionalism they demonstrate. Every company has certain rules and regulations that it wants its employees to follow, apart from its mission and vision. When you enter the premises of the office, you are supposed to behave in a certain way – which is guided by these rules and regulations of your company. That is how your company defines you as a professional.

I have been working in Hewlett-Packard Customer Strategic Center for last one and a half years and have gone through many seasons in here. I have seen a lot of people here who varied on their sex, region, language, customs and religion. There is a good cultural and regional diversity in the office which may be comparable with diverse Indian culture. In spite of all these, the professional behavior illustrated by most employees here is exemplary. People behave in a sober professional way – be it in the operation floor, in the cafeteria or even in the smoking zone.

Employees show trust and respect towards fellow employees and know how to behave with each other – be that person a colleague, a supervisor or a manager. The environment created inside the office is truly professional and you can feel it the very moment you step into the office. The attitude shown by the people towards work and towards the fellow employees here makes this workplace a Great Place to Work (GPTW).

Being a professional helps a person to reorganize and improve himself or herself. Practice makes a man perfect. Practicing professional attitude and behavior day in and day out in office will surely help a person enhance his conduct not only inside office but also outside the premises – hence reforming this overall personality. A person with consistent and cognizant professional behavior is liked by everybody, wherever he goes or whatever he does.

Professionalism is a habit that is inculcated through regular practice with a conscious effort. It can not be taught in any school or in any personality development center. It can only come through observation, culture and positive application of all the habits. A person is best described by his attitude, personality and professionalism that he exhibits.
